Easy DIY Indoor Birdhouse Decor for under $5

Do you ever find yourself walking aimlessly down the dollar store aisles when inspiration strikes? Such was the case the other day when they were stocking the shelves with wood birdhouses. A light bulb went off for my mission to style our new master bedroom built-ins on a budget. I gathered a few more dollar store finds to make adorable DIY indoor birdhouse decor for under $5. I made two different styles of DIY birdhouses on posts and I'll show you how simple they were to make.

DIY Indoor Birdhouses From Dollar Store Finds

I have a thing for birdhouses which I think stems back from my childhood. My Mamère and Papère had several trees in their back yard and my Papère, being a carpenter, built an entire birdhouse village. I adored those birdhouses and would sit on the back porch watching the birds fly from one to another for hours.

Thanks to that childhood memory, while not an entire village, I have several birdhouses in my backyard. I also added some as fence post toppers on our DIY Louvered Door Garden Screen.

But I also love to incorporate them indoors with my Spring and Summer vignettes. Both painted birdhouses look perfect displayed on the Custom Built-In Bookcase and 5-Panel Door Headboard in our master bedroom.

Both indoor birdhouses were painted similar colors but each one has a different repurposed candlestick base. We'll start with the one with the dollar store glass candlestick base.

Pictured below are the supplies I used to make the painted birdhouse. I had a different vision initially but repainted the birdhouse in softer muted Spring colors.

Dollar Store Supplies For Indoor Painted Birdhouse

First, the wooden dollar store birdhouse was painted with Old White chalk paint. The roof, perch, and picket fence were painted with Duck Egg Blue chalk paint that I had on hand. I highlighted the finial on the top and the base with Gold Metallic craft paint to pull the gold elements in our master bedroom.

Once the paint was dry I simply attached the glass candlestick to the base of the birdhouse with E6000 glue. I also attached a wood picket fence and metal bird that I had in my stash with the E6000 glue too.

This larger and taller indoor decorative birdhouse has a wooden candlestick base.

Attach the wood candlestick to the bottom of the birdhouse with E6000 glue.

The base of the candlestick is too narrow to support the birdhouse so I attached a wood block to the bottom with E6000. I let the glue cure 12-hours before moving onto the next step.

Farmhouse DIY Birdhouse Idea

I painted the entire birdhouse first with a dark gray Graphite chalk paint color. Next, I painted over the graphite with just one coat of Old White chalk paint. For a shabby chic farmhouse look, I distressed the white paint with 220 grit sandpaper to reveal the dark gray base coat.

I painted the window and roof trim with Duck Egg Blue chalk paint and distressed them with sandpaper also.

  8. The finish you did on the little birdhouse is what makes it special. I have seen these bird houses a few times, but wasn't sure about how to finish them so they don't look dollar store, or childlike. These are beautiful Marie

    1. Thanks so much, Leanna 😀 That was my concern too when I bought them and I was pleasantly surprised with the results. My favorite is definitely the one with the wooden candlestick base. They look adorable on the headboard ledge in our cottage style bedroom.
