10 Mother's Day Gift Ideas For Those Living In Long-Term Care

Do you find it challenging to shop for Mother's day gifts for a loved one in long-term care? Concerns about facility protocols, safety standards, and the small room size limit our choices. If your family member suffers from dementia or Alzheimer's, gift limitations are even larger.

Through trial and error, my family and I eventually figured out what gifts were needed and appreciated most. I know many of my readers have loved ones in assisted living and so I've curated a list of ideas to make shopping easier this year. I hope you find these 10 Mother's Day gift ideas for those in long-term care helpful.

10 Mother's Day Gift Ideas For Those In Assisted Living

I took some time curating this list with ideas that provide comfort, hold precious memories, or bring joy to your loved one's day. I hope you find some inspiring ideas here and find the list helpful.

1) Throw Pillow Cover

A pretty throw pillow with heartfelt sentiment serves as a daily reminder to Mom that she is loved. It adds a personal touch to a bedside chair or on their otherwise hospital-looking bed.

2) Pop-Up Paper Flower Bouquet Card

While fresh flower arrangements are always beautiful, they can be a danger for those suffering from dementia or Alzheimers. A pop-up paper bouquet is a great alternative that serves both as a Mother's Day card and flower arrangement that can be displayed throughout the year.

3) Floral Nightgown

Instead of a nightgown provided by the facility, make Mom feel special with a pretty floral nightgown in a lightweight breathable 100% cotton that provides non-see-through coverage.

4) Non-Slip Memory Foam Slippers

These memory foam slippers in pretty colors have a non-slip rubber sole and adjustable hook and loop strap that is easy to slip on and off.

5) Summer Door Wreath

Most facilities encourage hanging small wreaths on resident room doors not only because it adds a personal touch but it helps residents easily identify their room.

6) Lavender Hand And Body Lotion

A relaxing organic lavender hand and body lotion that helps moisturize extra dry skin. Staff encourages keeping a supply of body lotion on hand for them to apply before bedtime. The scent of lavender will help calm and relax your loved one before bed.

7) Reversible Twin Bedding Set

Most long-term care facilities encourage personal blankets and bedspreads to give the room a homey feel. This light purple orchid coverlet is reversible, 100% cotton, and machine washable.

8) Digital Photo Frame

Upload family photos and video clips of special events into a digital photo frame. It comes with auto On/Off Timer so the light from the screen isn't bothersome at night.

9) Family Picture Frame

If the facility does not allow digital photo frames because of the electrical cord factor, here is another alternative. Family can interchange photos with recent events or have your loved one's favorites hanging from the frame.

10) Grandma Heart Suncatchers

A pretty stained glass suncatcher with dried pressed flowers and has a lovely engraved "Grandma" heart-shaped pendant hanging inside.

11) Bonus Idea

The best gift I gave my Mom, who suffered from Alzheimer's, was a handmade busy blanket, also known as a fidget blanket. My biggest regret was not making it years earlier. If making one is not an option, I found these Dementia/Alzheimer's busy blankets on Amazon.

  2. Fantastic ideas Marie! Completely on-point and useful for people in assisted living. Come to think of it deeply - great gifts for any mom! I give my mom money (not gift certificates or vouchers), so she can treat herself with what she desires or thinks necessary to have.
