Unscary Half Pumpkin Door Hanger For Halloween

Do you prefer a less spooky approach to decorating for Halloween? Today I'm sharing an easy peasy half-pumpkin door hanger for Halloween that won't scare the little trick or treaters.

While it has a traditional lime green and black hallows eve color scheme, the polka dot ribbons make it a playful Halloween wreath idea. It cost very little to make and you'll see why further down in the post.

Halloween Pumpkin Door Wreath Idea

The motivation for the pumpkin door hanger came from finding two half craft pumpkins at Goodwill for $3 each.

The inspiration for turning them into a Halloween door hanger is the beaded ribbon. When you look closely, they remind me of creepy glow-in-the-dark crystal balls.

Everything to make the Halloween pumpkin door hanger is either from a thrift store and dollar store or items found in my craft bin. But I've included links to similar products in the supply list.

Here's how I made it

This pumpkin door hanger is so easy to make that you'll have it finished in less than 30 minutes. It is a fun Halloween craft to do with kids. We'll begin by painting the foam craft pumpkins.

Painting Foam Craft Pumpkins

To add some spook factor to the foam craft pumpkins plus to add contrast so the lime green beaded ribbon stands out, paint the white pumpkins black. I used FAT Paint in a most fitting color called Raven.

Any black craft paint will work or better yet, save yourself the time and buy half pumpkins that are already black.

Polka Dot Bow Pumpkin Stems

I found the lime green polka dot ribbon at the dollar store and made loopy bows to attach to the stem of each pumpkin. I used one spool of ribbon for both pumpkins but for fuller bows, I would suggest using one spool per pumpkin.

If you are like me and all thumbs when making bows, cheat and use a handy bow maker tool. I'd be lost without this thing!

Simply attach each bow to the pumpkin stems with florist wire (pictured below) or a dab of hot glue.

Creepy Crystal Ball Ribbon Embellishment

To add a little creepiness to the Halloween pumpkins I embellished them with the green & white crystal ball-looking beaded ribbon mentioned earlier. Simply string them diagonally across the front of the pumpkins and secure them with dabs of hot glue on the back.

Did you know chalk paint can be used as chalkboard paint? Alternatively, you could eliminate the beaded ribbon and add typography to the front of the painted pumpkins with a stick of chalk or chalk pens instead.

Ribbon Door Hanger

Cut a strand of 1 1/2-inch black & white polka dot ribbon 24-inch long. Center the pumpkins on the ribbon and attach them with hot glue.

Either space the pumpkins evenly on the ribbon or do what I did and have a longer tail on the bottom. My bottom pumpkin is glued approximately 7-inches from the bottom of the ribbon hanger.

Next, trim the tails on all the ribbons with an inverted V. Fold the ribbon in half vertically with good sides facing together. From the outer edge of the ribbon cut on an angle towards the fold.

Hanging Pumpkin Door Hanger

A temporary way to hang the Halloween door hanger without damaging the door is to attach a 3M Velcro Command Strip. After Halloween simply tug on the tab to remove the hanger from the door.

So the door hanger doesn't swing back and forth when the door is opened and closed, add another 3M Velcro Command Strip on the bottom of the door hanger ribbon.

What I'd Do Differently

Here's where I'm keeping it real! It's so easy to get lost in the details of a project and not see the obvious. In hindsight, there are a couple of things I wish I had done differently. One is to add either tree branch pumpkin stems or preserved real pumpkin stems on each pumpkin.

The other would be to combine the black & white and green & white polka dot ribbons for a fuller loopy bow on top of each pumpkin. I would eliminate the black & white bow on the very top but still used a strand of black & white ribbon for the pumpkin hanger.
