Easy Orange Sunflower Fall Wreath DIY
Have you started your fall decorating yet? Every year I like to make a new wreath for our front door and oftentimes just recycle the same grapevine wreath form. This year I decided to make a colorful and traditional orange sunflower fall wreath that is so easy to make.
Have you been following the 5th Annual Fall Ideas Tour this week? Twenty-nine bloggers have come together to bring you loads of Fall decorating inspiration! I'm so excited to be a part of the tour again, after having missed the last two years. Today as you may have guessed, the topic is wreaths.
Thank you Angie Postcards From The Ridge for organizing this amazing tour every year. If you've come over from Bliss Ranch and this is your first visit, welcome! Allow me to introduce myself HERE.
The Fall Ideas Tour kicked off on Monday with Fall Mantel ideas and ends on Friday with Fall Porch ideas. You can find links to each day of the tour at the bottom of this post along with links for today's six inspiring Fall Wreath ideas.
When browsing Michaels for traditional fall picks my heart went pitter-patter when I saw bundles of beautiful bright orange sunflower stems. The plan was to use just three but once I got started I couldn't resist using all eight of the sunflowers in the bouquet. This autumn wreath is easy to make using just four faux elements.
The lovely muted orange and cream plaid ribbon and the cream-colored berries tone down the bright orange florals.
Going in, the plan was to arrange the elements on the bottom of the wreath but after deciding to use all the pretty sunflowers, I changed the plan to an asymmetrical style. As I mentioned earlier, I recycled an old wreath form that I had on hand. The earthy brown echoes the color in the center of the sunflowers and the natural branches are perfect for Fall.
Here in the Canadian prairies, it is not uncommon to have snow in October. So instead of having my Fall wreath hanging on the outside of the front door, I'll be hanging it on a large mirror in our front entry.
I'll decorate the cabinet below the mirror with more traditional colors as well as some copper elements to tie in with the wreath.
I'm still hanging onto the last few days of summer before decorating our home for fall. I know I'll be motivated by all the inspiration during the tour this week.
These are the supplies I used to make the Fall wreath.

Orange Sunflower Stems (8 sunflowers)
2 Large Cream Berry Picks
1 Yellow Amaranthus Pick
3 Large Acorn Picks
Natural Raffia Ribbon
2 1/2 Inch Wired Orange & Cream Plaid Fall Ribbon
Florist Wire
Wire Cutters
Bow Maker Tool (optional)
To clean a plain grapevine wreath (without florals), spray it with a water bottle and hang it to drip dry. You could also take it outside or in the garage and remove the dust with a blow dryer or can of compressed air (used to clean electronics).
The grapevine wreath I'm using was a magnolia wreath that hung on our front door every fall for more years than I can remember. I cleaned the faded magnolia picks much the same way as the wreath for future fall crafts. Nothing goes to waste around here.
I love an asymmetrical style wreath. My sunflowers came in two sizes so I added four large and one small sunflower to the left side of the wreath. I staggered them so they didn't line up like ducks in a row. On the right side of the bow, I grouped three small sunflowers.
I could have stopped here and called the wreath complete, wouldn't you agree?
Each berry pick had two sets of leaves and so I added three between the berry picks on the left side of the wreath, tucking them behind the sunflowers.
To create balance on the right side of the wreath, I slipped just one sprig of the Amaranthus behind the cluster of sunflowers. They're definitely long and wispy and I may bend them more so they rest closer to the wreath form. What do you think?
When the wreath was finished and I stood back, the ribbon tails on the bow made the wreath look unbalanced. After I tucked them behind, the wreath looked so much better.
So what do you think?
As I mentioned at the top of the post, I missed the last two years of the Fall Ideas Tour. I made this easy peasy DIY scrabble tile fall wreath for the first Fall Ideas Tour in 2015. In 2016, I made this unique faux Burberry scarf wreath.

Materials List
16-inch Grapevine WreathOrange Sunflower Stems (8 sunflowers)
2 Large Cream Berry Picks
1 Yellow Amaranthus Pick
3 Large Acorn Picks
Natural Raffia Ribbon
2 1/2 Inch Wired Orange & Cream Plaid Fall Ribbon
Florist Wire
Wire Cutters
Bow Maker Tool (optional)
Here's How I Made The Autumn Wreath
Recycled Grapevine Wreath Form
Wreath forms can be pricey so I'm always on the lookout at garage sales and thrift stores for used ones. Even if they have ugly embellishments on them, they can easily be removed and the branches cleaned for future craft projects.
Step 1 - Start With The Largest Element
I started embellishing my grapevine wreath with the largest element, the loopy bow wired to the bottom center of the wreath. I used the entire spool of 2 1/2-inch wired plaid ribbon and it made thirteen loops. I'm all thumbs when it comes to making bows so I cheat and use this handy bow maker.Step 2 - The Largest Florals
The most dominant element on the wreath is the pretty orange sunflowers. When making wreaths, place the elements in groups of three or odd numbers.I love an asymmetrical style wreath.
Step 3 - Adding More Color And Texture
I wanted a fuller wreath plus I didn't want to waste the other pretty fall picks that I purchased so I kept going by adding more color and textural elements to the sunflower wreath.Large White Berry Picks
Next, I added the large cream-colored berry picks. They came with two clusters of berries on each pick and I separated them into four clusters. I spaced three clusters evenly on the left side of the wreath. I like how they pick up the cream color in the bow. Each berry pick had two sets of leaves and so I added three between the berry picks on the left side of the wreath, tucking them behind the sunflowers.
Large Faux Acorn Picks
I took the acorn picks apart and tied natural raffia ribbon on the wire before attaching them onto the left side of the wreath.Yellow Amaranthus Pick
To introduce a third color, I split the yellow Amaranthus pick apart and slipped two pieces at varying heights behind the top sunflower on the left side.To create balance on the right side of the wreath, I slipped just one sprig of the Amaranthus behind the cluster of sunflowers. They're definitely long and wispy and I may bend them more so they rest closer to the wreath form. What do you think?
When the wreath was finished and I stood back, the ribbon tails on the bow made the wreath look unbalanced. After I tucked them behind, the wreath looked so much better.

Fall
Your wreath is gorgeous, Marie! Hanging it inside to protect it is good for your harsh Canadian climate and it will be in a spot where you can enjoy it multiple times a day. I love those sunflowers and how you accented them with berries, Amaranthus, acorns, and that lovely plaid bow. This former teacher gives you a big A+ for this project!
ReplyDeleteWoot woot, I'm all for an A+ 😊 LOL I'm glad you like the wreath Paula, it really does make me smile everytime I enter the house.
DeleteBeautiful Marie! I even liked it with just that gorgeous bow. Of course all those pretty sunflowers, pods and grasses made it even more beautiful. Great job.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Patti! I almost made the wreath with just the bow and three sunflowers but decided to go big or go home. Okay, truthfully, I was too cheap to waste the other stuff I bought. LOL
DeleteI didn't know a cheat for bow making existed, and I really need that! My daughter planted a variety of colorful sunflowers, hoping she got some orange ones and then I can sit down and copy your wreath, because I also learned on the tour this morning that I don't have to just hang wreaths on doors!
ReplyDeleteBliss, I thought your fresh dahlias were so pretty on your amazing wreath but fresh orange sunflowers? Come on! Finger's crossed she got some in her garden. Oh and that bow maker, best thing since sliced bread!
DeleteMarie, you wreath is so bright and colorful! Thanks for the detailed tutorial! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Pam 😊 I'm glad you like the wreath and the tutorial.
DeleteI love the orange sunflowers! I hadn't really noticed them at Michael's before. Seems I was stuck on yellow, but your original idea here has opened new wreath doors. Love the entire color layout and how you included so many flowers, but still achieved the light and airy feel ... That's a sign of prime wreath making right there. Happy Fall XO
ReplyDeleteHappy Fall back to you my friend! I was stuck on yellow too and had bundles of them in my cart until I saw the orange ones and the angels sang. LOL
DeleteWhat a beautiful wreath, Marie! I love the bright colors and that rustic frame, a perfect way to welcome fall.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Kim! I love neutrals and was heading that direction until I saw those luscious bright orange sunflowers. LOL
DeleteMarie, this is so warm and pretty. I love those orange sunflowers. And the orange and cream bow complements everything so well. Thanks for sharing how you made it. So happy you're able to tour with us again this year!
ReplyDeleteThank you again for organizing this wonderful tour, Angie. I hated missing the last two but I'm honored to be back on the tour wagon again. Thank You 🤗
DeleteAbsolutely beautiful and I just love the color of the bow!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Christina 😊 I did the happy dance when I walked away with the last spool of that pretty ribbon.
DeleteThose orange sunflowers are awesome! And I love them with the orange and white check ribbon. I'm so glad you're going to hang it on a mirror;) So fun to be hopping with you again, friend!
ReplyDeleteLora, I was thinking the same thing about how fun it is to be hopping with you again! You know that I smiled when one of your wreath display tips was a mirror. 👍🏻
DeleteI always "bow" my wreaths last, but I'm going to have to try your technique the next time. Love your fall wreath. The colors are perfect for the season.
ReplyDeleteI totally went against bow protocol on this one, normally I add the bow last too. I guess that pretty ribbon wanted to steal the show! LOL
DeleteThis is so pretty I love all the orange tones you chose for the wreath. Sunflowers are always such a great symbol of fall since they symbolize adoration, loyalty and longevity, perfect for that first impression.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Jen! I appreciate your sweet comment and the visit 😊
DeleteWow Marie! That is a stunning wreath! You clearly have a knack for wreathmaking! And I don't blame you for keeping it indoors...plus you will probably get to enjoy it more indoors anyway!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration.
So happy to join you on this fantastic blog tour!
Hugs, Lynn
You're so sweet, thank you very much, Lynn! I am enjoying those pretty orange sunflowers on the inside of our house. So happy to finally be jumping on the tour bus again 😊 Hugs backatcha!
DeleteThis wreath is stunning!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Lindsay! xo
DeleteHi Marie, I am loving your wreath! The orange sunflowers are a beautiful find and you've done a wonderful job building your Fall wreath! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Kim! It was a fun wreath to put together and I'm so enjoying those bright orange sunflowers on the inside of the house instead of on the front door. Fun to be on the tour and working with you again!
DeleteThe colors in your wreath are so beautiful Marie. I love the sunflowers ;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much my friend! xo Those bright orange sunflowers bring a smile to my face everytime I look at them.
DeleteYour fall wreath is beautiful, Marie! So happy and colorful with the orange. Perfect for fall!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Kristi! I'm so glad I hung the wreath indoors because those pretty orange sunflowers do make me smile everytime I look at them.
DeleteMarie your wreath is gorgeous! I love the orange ribbon it is amazing!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Susan! I had one of those "start the car IKEA commercial" moments when realizing I grabbed the last spool...and it was on sale 70% off!
DeleteSo pretty!!! Such a great wreath to transition from summer into fall!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Maryann! I'm enjoying the bright colors of Fall while hanging on tight to the last few days of summer. LOL
DeleteYour wreath is amazing Marie! I love the bright, happy colors and the unusual (but beautiful) orange sunflowers! How perfect for Fall!!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Cindy! They definitely are happy colors and make me smile everytime I get a glance of the wreath.
DeleteOooh, I love your pretty fall wreath! The color of the sunflowers and that pretty ribbon are perfect!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Eileen! That ribbon must be popular this year because I grabbed the very last roll.
DeleteLove it! May favorite colors :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, I'm glad you like it 😊
DeleteWhat a gorgeously layered wreath, Marie. Here comes autumn!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, I'm glad you like it!
DeleteMarie,
ReplyDeleteYou're a woman after my own hert - I love orange! Your wreath is so bright and cheery. I'm glad you are brave enough to go with something so colorful and not the same old neutrals I'm seeing so much of. I need vibrant pops of color to make me happy!
I admire and appreciate calm serene neutrals - probably because I'm the complete opposite. What can I say, like you, I need vibrant pops of color to make me happy! I'm glad you appreciate the bright color of my fall wreath. xo
ReplyDeleteThis wreath is stunning, I'm usually a neutral girl, but these pops of orange and making me happy! I love a good asymmetrical design and this wreath hits it outta the park!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your sweet comments, Laurie and the visit! I'm doing a happy dance that a neutral loving gal is liking my happy pops of orange. LOL
DeleteYour wreath turned out great Marie! Love the orange buffalo check ribbon you used.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Pamela, I'm glad you like it! When I saw that very last spool of buffalo check ribbon on the shelf, I grabbed it and ran. LOL
DeleteYour wreath is pretty Marie, but the bow is just gorgeous. I don't remember ever seeing a wreath with a ribbon that stood out so well. Hope that makes sense, I do hand tie my ribbons but your bow make me think its time to play with one.
ReplyDeleteLeanna, I had one of those start the car IKEA commercial moments with that ribbon. It was the very last spool at Michaels and I found it tucked elsewhere away from the ribbons. I was jumping for joy when I saw it because it couldn't have been more perfect for my wreath. I must have searched a half hour for another spool without luck. It obviously was a popular ribbon this Fall. LOL
ReplyDeleteWow! This is a gorgeous wreath, Marie!! I love the different colors and textures you used! It's absolutely beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kristi, I'm glad you like it and appreciate the visit! Happy Fall 🍂
DeleteGreat wreath and I love the ribbon you chose. Turned out fantastic. Thanks for the cheat on the bow.
ReplyDeletePinning.
Cindy
Thank you so much Cindy, I'm glad you like the wreath and the bow making tip! I'd be lost without that thing. LOL
DeleteThank you for sharing at #OverTheMoon. Pinned and shared. Have a lovely week. I hope to see you at next week’s party too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the share and pin, Marilyn! xo Wishing you a lovely week too 😊
DeleteSuch a gorgeous wreath, Marie... I'm crushing on those cream berries this year!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Julie 😊 I know right, those cream berries are so pretty and I wish I had picked up more of them because they are all gone.
DeleteWhat a gorgeous wreath for fall. I think that's my favorite ribbon I've seen this season!
ReplyDeleteHi Christy, thank you so much! I think it's a ribbon favorite this year because I grabbed the very last roll. I've since been unable to find more anywhere!
DeleteI'm so glad you shared this on TTA... I'll be featuring you this coming Tuesday! ;-) (I think you can still find the berries online at Michael's... not sure if that helps in Canada, though!)
ReplyDeleteWoot woot, thank you so much Julie for the feature! And thanks for the berry tip, I'll check the Canadian site.
DeleteSo pretty, Marie. :)
ReplyDeleteSheila
Thanks Sheila! Those orange sunflowers just make me happy.

Gorgeous wreath! I love the orange flowers and the ribbon! It's the perfect fall wreath!
ReplyDeleteThank you T'onna, I'm normally not a fan of bright orange for my fall decorating but those pretty sunflowers were calling my name.
DeleteLove the colors! So pretty!! ~ Kristin | White Arrows Home
ReplyDeleteThanks Kristin, those orange sunflowers make me smile.

ReplyDeleteThank you, Michelle!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your post with us on Embracing Home and Family link-up. I hope you join us again this Friday!
-Cherelle
Thanks Cherelle, I'm glad you like the wreath. Funny thing about the buffalo check ribbon. It was a hot commodity and when I went back to get more they were sold out. The following year I may have hoarded a few rolls because I love it so much.
