How To Make A Rustic Patriotic Sign For Canada Day

With July quickly upon us, I'm sharing a rustic patriotic sign for Canada Day. It's an easy and inexpensive patriotic decor craft made with a dollar store wooden pallet plaque.

The stenciled sign could easily be adapted for the 4th of July. Just switch the Canadian flag stencil with an American flag and I've provided links for both stencils in the supply list below.

While the DIY sign may be brand new, we're going to give it a time-worn look to add some rustic charm. The nice thing about using a readymade white wood pallet plaque is that half the work is already done for you. Let's get started.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to make the patriotic flag sign, almost all of the DIY projects shared here at Interior Frugalista have step-by-step tutorials so why not get your budget DIY on and subscribe. You can also follow us on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Here's How I Made It

I found the white wooden plank sign at the dollar store for $4. It's the perfect base to give the sign a rustic style. Plus it'll be perfect to hang above the Adirondack Canada Flag Footstool I upcycled last week.

Canadian Flag Stencil

Half the work was already done with the sig already painted white. Now, all we have to do is stencil a Canadian flag onto it. Use low-tack spray adhesive to hold the 8 ½" x 11" Canadian Flag stencil in place.

Next, I pounced Dixie Belle Paint Company Barn Red paint with my favorite round stencil brush.

Pro-Tip

The trick to not getting paint bleed when stenciling is to dab the stencil brush onto a paper towel first to remove the excess paint. You want the brush to be almost dry.

Also, start dabbing or swirling the brush in the center of the open area of the stencil and work your way towards the edges. Less paint is always more when stenciling!

Adding Typography

To customize the sign I decided to add the fun Oh Canada typography over the flag. To do this I went to PicMonkey to design the graphic. Once printed onto regular bond paper, I used this Image Transfer Technique to apply it to the top of the sign.

I've included a FREE download of the unwatermarked printable for you to use if you'd like HERE.

Protective Finish

Once the paint is dry, age the sign with brown glaze. I used Dixie Belle Paint Company Van Dyke Brown Glaze.

To do this, dampen an inexpensive chip brush and then dip just the tips of the brush into the glaze. With light pressure and long brush strokes swipe the brush across the sign and remove the excess with a paper towel.

That's it, we're done, I told you it was an easy peasy patriotic sign idea. Happy Canada Day!
