Living in eco-concious Germany, we've always had a composte system going but it was only when we built our house that we were able to set up a water barrel too. I know my plants benefit more from being watered with natural rainwater rather than our very hard tap water. You just need to cut a hole on the top of a barrel and add a screen of some kind to collect the debris.
