The Easiest String Light Canada Day Banner

If you enjoy adding patriotic touches to your home for Canada Day or Independence Day, then you'll like this patriotic dollar store craft? This super easy Canada Day string light banner is made with battery-operated red solo cup string lights and other dollar store supplies. It's a cute patriotic banner for your festivities by day and cozy lighting in the evening after the sun goes down.

Being a Canadian gal, mine is made for Canada Day but if you live in the USA, the banner could easily be adapted for the 4th of July. Simply add some blue ribbon and instead of a maple leaf, embellish the solo cups with a star. In less than an hour, your patriotic banner will be ready to hang either indoors or out to welcome guests.

Easy Peasy String Light Patriotic Banner For Canada Day

Indoors it would look cute hanging from a fireplace mantle, a stair railing, or an entry mirror. But as you can see in the photos, I'm hanging mine outdoors.

The rustic mini pallet Canada Day coasters pictured in the photo below are also a fun DIY patriotic craft made with popsicle sticks.

Where can I hang the Canada Day banner outdoors?

In the backyard, hang it under a patio umbrella or pergola, on the fence, outdoor serving cart, or on a potting bench like I did.

Show your patriotic pride by hanging the Canada Day banner on a front porch railing, apartment balcony, or deck railing. Once it gets dark, flick the switch to light up the banner while you enjoy your Canada Day festivities with family and friends.

We hung the Canada Day banner near our backyard firepit so it adds ambiance to our marshmallow roast. We've even added a fun element for starting our fire with cute toilet paper roll rocket & firecracker firepit starters.

What You'll Need To Make It

As mentioned earlier, everything to make this fun string light Canada Day banner can be found at the dollar store. It's a fun patriotic dollar store craft to do with the kids!

Now that we've covered what supplies you'll need, let's get started making this quick and easy Canada Day Banner with string lights.

Solo Cup String Lights

Don't worry if you can't find solo cup string lights like mine. You could easily make these with mini solo shot glasses and a strand of battery-operated string lights. Simply poke a small hole in the top of each plastic solo cup with something like an awl and pop the string light bulbs through each one.

Patriotic Maple Leaf Embellishment

To add a patriotic element to the string light Canada Day banner, paint wooden maple leaf cutouts from the dollar store with white acrylic craft paint. The paint dries really fast and you'll only need one coat on one side only.

Once the paint is dry, simply hot glue a painted wooden maple leaf to the front of each red solo cup.

Red And White Canada Day Banner Ribbon

Cut narrow white and red ribbon into 12-inch strands. I used a 5/8-inch ribbon but you can go wider if you like. You'll need ten strands of red and twenty strands of white ribbon. Cut the ribbon ends on a diagonal like pictured below.

Fold the ribbon in half and place it in front of the string light wire and pull the ends through the loop and tighten. It's that easy!

Tie red and white ribbon onto string light Canada Day banner.

Between each solo cup attach two white ribbons with a red in the middle. If you want a fuller banner, add more ribbon between each solo cup or use a wider ribbon.
