Easy Felt Craft Idea For Holiday Gift Giving

The motivation for making them is the felted fixations theme for our last Int'l Bloggers Club Challenge of 2021. The last one already, how did that happen!

If you haven't heard of our Int'l Bloggers Club, we are a group of blogging friends from South Africa, Australia, Spain, the USA, and Canada who come together on the third Monday of every month to share a themed DIY project.

Last month for our beads galore challenge I made a Beetlejuice-inspired beaded wire pumpkin wreath for Halloween. I've included links to our talented member's felted fixations ideas this month further down in the post.

Most everything you'll need to make these adorable felt elf shoe gift card holders can be found at the dollar store or your craft bin. If you're like me and have a huge stash of leftover ribbon, this is a great way to use up the bits left on the spools.

These are the supplies I picked up at the dollar store. Plus I dug through my stash of holiday ribbons, mostly purchased over the years at the dollar store as well. Considering these are no-sew, you'll also need a hot glue gun OR fabric glue.

Supply List

Assorted Felt Squares
Elf Shoe Template (printable included)
Assorted Christmas Ribbons
Mini Christmas Bells
Mini Christmas Pom Poms (optional)
Sharp Scissors
Hot Glue Gun OR Fabric Glue

Here's How I Made It

First, you'll need an elf shoe template and I've included a printable for you to use. Just click on the pattern below for your free unwatermarked download.

I made mine by tracing the pattern onto thin cardboard. But using the printed paper pattern is just fine too.

Double up the felt squares in each color so you can cut both the front and back of each elf shoe at once. Trace the elf shoe pattern for each color with a pencil or white pencil crayon for the darker colors.

Tracing the elf show gift card pattern onto small doubled up felt squares.

Cut the elf shoes along the pencil line with sharp scissors. To eliminate any visible pencil marks after cutting them out, I flipped the pieces inside out and pinned them together with these awesome sewing clips.

Next, figure out your ribbon configurations for each elf shoe and cut the ribbon slightly larger so the ends can be tucked inside to eliminate fraying.

Aligning assorted Christmas ribbons on the top of the DIY felt elf shoe gift card holders.

Fire up the hot glue gun with clear glue sticks and glue each ribbon to the front of the felt.

Fold the ribbon to the back of the front felt piece and trim if necessary. Add a dab of hot glue to hold in place.

Folding the ends of the ribbon to the inside of the elf boot gift card holder front pieces.

Run a thin bead of hot glue (or fabric glue) along the edge of the bottom elf shoe piece and set the top piece in place.

Hot glue a tiny Christmas bell onto the curled end of each elf shoe.

Slip your gift cards inside the cute little elf shoes and you're done. Let's take a closer look at each of the five elf boot gift cardholders.

  1. What an adorable way to give a gift card. So much better than stuffing them in an envelope and those elf shoes would look super cute strung on a banner too. Pinned for future reference.

    1. You read my mind Michelle. When I was making them I thought they'd make a cute advent calendar banner as well. Thanks for the pin!

  2. These are SO fun Marie and we used the exact same felt squares from Dollarama for our project so I'm going to make some of these with the leftovers! Love them!

    1. Yes I chuckled when I saw that we used the exact same felt squares AND I came so close to doing a blanket stitch around the perimeter of the shoes as well. I even had the embroidery thread and needle ready to go and decided at that the last minute to make them no-sew. LOL

    1. It never even dawned on me to use my Cricut to cut the elf shoe felt! Believe me though, the machine is getting a lot of use for handmade Christmas gifts which I can't share on the blog until after the 25th. I'm glad you like the handmade gift card holders, Anita, thank you!

  5. Marie, this is the cutest project. I can even see them on a tree used as a money holder.
I like that you hot glued them instead of sewing. That makes it a project everyone can do!

    1. Great idea as money holders on a tree! My goal was to make them easy peasy no sew but being a sewer, it took everything for me not to pull out the needle and thread to assemble them with a blanket stitch (which is an option for those that like to sew).
