Bedazzled Wire DIY Halloween Pumpkin Wreath

How to make a fun Beetlejuice-inspired bedazzled wire DIY Halloween pumpkin wreath with dollar store supplies. Today is our International Bloggers Club Challenge and the theme this month is, beads galore. I happen to have a large container of assorted wood beads that I bought at the dollar store over two years ago.

Recently when I found a wire pumpkin form at Dollar Tree, I knew it would be perfect for finally putting the wood beads to good use. The pumpkin wreath organically came together in my shopping cart while browsing the seasonal decor aisle.

Beaded DIY Halloween Pumpkin Wreath

The hardest part about making the unscary wreath is waiting for the paint to dry. Everything you need to make it can be found at the dollar store, which makes it a budget-friendly Halloween craft.

I did use some wooden beads from the container earlier this year when I made a pink ombre Valentine garland. Thankfully I had just enough to string on the wire pumpkin form for the bedazzled Halloween wreath.

If you haven't heard of our International Bloggers Club, we are a group of blogging friends from Spain, South Africa, Australia, the USA, and Canada who come together on the third Monday of every month to share a themed DIY project.

Last month for our spin me a spindle challenge I repurposed antique chair parts into unique chair spindle wind chimes. I've included links to our talented members' beads galore ideas this month further down in the post.

How To Make A Bedazzled Wire Halloween Wreath

You'll need a total of approximately 190 beads to make the DIY Halloween wire pumpkin wreath as follows:
36 Square Beads
36 Ribbed Round Beads
118 Round Beads

Fun Facts About Traditional Halloween Colors And Their Meanings

When deciding what colors to paint the wooden beads I learned some fun facts about the meanings behind the five traditional Halloween colors in North America:

  • Black represents our dark long winters but we also know that it is associated with death.
  • Orange represents the autumn harvest season but is associated with the warmth and light of fire against the dark sky.
  • Green is associated with Frankenstein, scary monsters, and witches.
  • Purple is also associated with witches and wizards. But combined with black, apparently tones down the spookiness of Halloween for children.
  • White is associated with the restlessness of otherworldly ghosts and spirits.

Paint Halloween Pumpkin Wreath Wood Beads

I chose all five colors for the painted beads on my bedazzled Halloween wire pumpkin wreath. Before painting the beads, string them through wooden skewers held upright in recycled styrofoam, as pictured below. Paint the beads as follows:

  • 40 round beads with black acrylic craft paint
  • 42 round beads with orange acrylic craft paint
  • 36 round beads with purple violet acrylic craft paint
  • 36 ribbed round beads with white acrylic craft paint
  • 36 square beads with green acrylic craft paint or this glow-in-the-dark craft paint

The black and green beads only needed two coats of paint but the other colors needed three coats for full coverage. I've included some tips below for painting beads.

Helpful Tips For Painting Wood Beads

  1. If you put pressure on the top bead on the skewer it prevents the other beads from spinning while you're painting.
  2. To speed up the drying time between coats, use either a heat gun set on low or a blow dryer. Direct the heat upwards otherwise, you risk melting the styrofoam base.
  3. A much quicker way to paint the beads is with spray paint in Halloween colors. Unfortunately, it was too chilly outside so I painted them indoors with a small paintbrush.

But if time isn't on your side or you're thinking there is no way you are going to paint all those beads, then I found these readymade Halloween bead options for you.

Black & White Squiggly Beetlejuice Stripes

Have you ever tried painting perfectly straight lines on a sphere? I quickly learned that it isn't easy! I started with a script liner art brush and well that went to hell in a handbasket then I tried a fine-tip black Sharpie paint pen that worked much better.

But as you can see in the photo below, the stripes are far from straight. So I decided to embrace the imperfections and call them squiggly Beetlejuice-inspired stripes. 😉

Once all the beads are painted, protect the paint with a couple of coats of gloss clear spray paint.

Cyclops Monster Beads

I didn't have enough round beads for the wreath but when looking at the square beads in the container my thoughts immediately went to green cyclops monsters. I simply attached a small googly eye to each painted green bead with a dab of hot glue.

Believe me, there were several attempts at drawing a more impressive monster mouth but they were an epic fail. With time not on my side, I decided to draw a simple frowning mouth with the same black Sharpie paint pen used in the previous step.

Stringing Painted Halloween Beads

To string the beads on the wire pumpkin form, cut the wire in the middle of each spine with wire cutters.

String the beads on each half following the color pattern. Join the two pieces back together again with a bead. Add a dab of hot glue to the top and bottom holes of the bead and slip each end of the wire into the bead.

To keep the cyclops from spinning, I added a dab of hot glue to the previous bead, as pictured below.

Creepy Rose Embellishments

To embellish the top of the pumpkin wreath, attach five creepy roses from the dollar store. But first, remove the black leaves from the stems. Trim the plastic rose stems much shorter with wire cutters.

Bend the rose stems to the curvature of the top of the pumpkin and attach the roses with black wire. Fill the voids with the black rose leaves with dabs of hot glue and/or black craft wire.

This step is completely optional. Add a small plastic skeleton, like I did, or another ghoulish embellishment to the rose leaves with a dab of hot glue.

Creepy Black Netting

Last but not least, glue creepy black fabric netting from the dollar store onto the back of the wreath.

Run a bead of hot glue around the frame of the pumpkin and set the cloth in place. These handy silicone finger protectors came in very handy to press on the cloth for a firm bond with the hot glue.

Trim the fabric and attach three plastic spiders to the front of the netting with dabs of hot glue.

That's it, now the beaded wire pumpkin wreath is ready to hang on the door for Halloween.
