Quick, Easy, And Cheap Christmas Mantel Idea

How to create a quick, easy, and cheap Christmas Mantel in minutes with dollar store finds and shopping your home. It is a minimalist style winter scape that could be kept on display after the holidays. This mantle scape also works well if you have a television hanging directly above the fireplace.

Cheap and Easy Christmas Mantel With Tv

Decorating the small fireplace in our basement media room is a challenge because of the large screen tv hanging directly above it. Not able to incorporate tall elements that block the screen limits the decorations. Choosing a minimalist style of decorating, especially on a small fireplace, helps to eliminate visual clutter.

The reflective glass and mirrors, sparkle from the fairy lights on the simple evergreen garland, and the flickering battery-operated tealights add pretty sparkle and shine, especially at night. The cute dioramas inside each jar are festive and fun. I've since added one more festive touch to the faux evergreen garland with a Simple Cranberry Garland DIY (not pictured).

We use this room a lot during the winter to watch movies and the fireplace makes it warm and cozy. Especially during the holidays, you can find us down here a lot watching Christmas movies. In fact, I wrote a post about our favorite Christmas movie tradition and how to make holiday movie nights extra special.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to decorate the fireplace mantel, almost all of the DIY projects shared here at Interior Frugalista have step-by-step tutorials so why not get your budget DIY on and subscribe. You can also follow us on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

What You'll Need To Make It

Shopping the home and a trip to the dollar store should get you everything you need to make this mantel scape.

Depending on the size of your fireplace you'll need at least three glass jars. I used five on our small 3-foot fireplace. Three were purchased at the dollar store several years ago so I'm not sure if they still carry them. But the other snowflake jars were purchased this year.

Alternatively, you could use large food jars or any large glass vessels that you have on hand. They don't have to have a lid either.

You'll also need some bottle brush trees, miniature houses or ornaments, and a bag of Epsom salts.

Plus you'll want an assortment of miniatures to incorporate into your Christmas diorama jars. Things like wildlife animals, figurines, snowmen, and other decor items you can find. If you check the Christmas village aisle you should have a large selection to choose from.

Some of the items pictured below may seem familiar if you've been following me for a while. The adorable vintage camper, Christmas tree, and a few other items pictured below were used in my Retro North Pole Christmas In A Jar display last year.

You'll also want a narrow white and silver ribbon, snowflake ribbon as pictured below, or something with a wintery pattern.

Shop your home or thrift stores for a long rectangular mirror or a few small mirrors. Alternatively, you could use dollar store mirrors in frames. Just remove the frame, or not. The mirrors provide a pretty reflective element to the mantel scape.

I used three mirrors that I purchased several years ago from Avon that I butt together across the mantel. I apologize for the reflection of the ugly ceiling in our workshop in the photo below.

Supply List

Glass Jars
Epsom Salts
Bottle Brush Trees
Christmas Village Miniatures
Miniature House Ornaments
Snowflake Ribbon
Mirror(s)
Votive Candleholders
Battery-Operated Tealights
Faux Snow (optional)

Here's How I Made It

First, wash the jars and let them completely dry before moving onto the next step. Fill the bottom of each jar with 1-2 inches of Epsom salts. Set your houses, bottle brush trees, and miniatures inside the jars. Can't get any easier than that!

Wrap ribbon around the top of each jar with a dab of hot glue to hold in place. Now we're ready to decorate the fireplace mantle with our festive winter scenes in a jar.

Set mirrors on top of the mantle and line the dioramas in a row on top of the mirrors. Add a couple of tealight candle holders but it's important that you use battery-operated tealights if you have a television hanging above the fireplace. Sprinkle the mirrors with faux snow (optional) and you have a pretty holiday mantel.
