How To Make An Easy Peasy Patriotic Ribbon Wreath

Do you like showing your patriotic pride by decorating your home for Canada Day or the 4th of July? Today I'm sharing an easy peasy patriotic ribbon wreath idea made with red burlap and white lace ribbon.

While I made it for Canada Day it can easily be adapted for the 4th of July by adding strips of blue ribbon and replacing the cute wooden maple leaf banner with wooden stars.

Handmade Canada Day Ribbon Wreath

This handmade patriotic wreath is easy and inexpensive to make because most of the supplies can be found at the dollar store. An even more budget-friendly option is using strips of fabric from recycled shirts in patriotic colors.

Here in Canada, it isn't as common to decorate our homes for July 1st like it is with our friends to the south for July 4th. It's more common to hang a small Canadian flag from our car windows or to wear a Canadian maple leaf t-shirt to show our patriotic pride.

But hanging a patriotic wreath on our front door is a great way to show our Canadian pride, southern style!

A popular way to celebrate over the long weekend is at the lake cottage, a campground, or with family and friends around the backyard firepit. So to add a little spark to the celebratory wiener and marshmallow roasts I made these fun patriotic toilet paper roll fire starters too.

I also made fun mini pallet patriotic drink coasters from popsicle sticks for either hostess gifts or to decorate a patriotic tablescape for family cookouts.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to make the patriotic wreath, almost all of the DIY projects shared here at Interior Frugalista have step-by-step tutorials so why not get your budget DIY on and subscribe. You can also follow us on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

I hope this easy-to-make patriotic front door wreath inspires you, whether you're a fellow canuck or a friend to the south. So let's gather our dollar store supplies and get busy making a simple patriotic wreath!

What You'll Need To Make It

I found the 12-inch wreath form for $2 at Goodwill but most dollar stores sell inexpensive wreath forms too. You don't have to use a wooden wreath form like I did.

You could use foam, grapevine, straw, or an embroidery hoop too. An even more budget-friendly option would be to make your own with heavy cardboard.

Supply List

  • 12-inch wreath form
  • 6 rolls white lace ribbon (white ribbon or white fabric cut into strips)
  • 2-inch red burlap ribbon (red ribbon or red fabric cut into strips)
  • White acrylic craft paint
  • Wooden Maple Leafs (dollar store)
  • Red & white bakers twine (string, ribbon, or natural twine)
  • I didn't use the pinwheels (pictured above)

Here's How I Made It

An easy and affordable handmade Patriotic Ribbon Wreath for Canada Day with a cute maple leaf banner that can easily be adapted for the 4th of July.

  1. This step is completely optional but if you paint the wooden wreath form with white acrylic paint it looks nicer between the ribbon gaps.
  2. Cut twelve strands of white lace ribbon 18-inches long. Alternatively, an old white shirt ripped into strips works too.
  3. Cut eighteen strands of red burlap ribbon 18-inches long. Mine is leftover from the Burlap Tabletop Trees I made for the holidays and the Burlap Valentine Rag Wreath. But again, alternatively, an old red shirt ripped into strips works too.

How To Attach Ribbon To The Wreath Form

The pattern we're using for the wreath is two strips of white ribbon followed by three strips of red ribbon repeated around the wreath. For the 4th of July, you could add strips of blue ribbon on the top left side of the wreath.

  1. Fold the ribbon in half.
  2. Lay it on the top of the wreath form.
  3. Pull the strips of ribbon from behind the wreath through the loop or fold on the front.
  4. Pull the ribbon tails until they are snug and adjust the ribbon so the loop is on the bottom.
  5. Once all the ribbon is on, trim if necessary (especially when using burlap ribbon).

Another option for tieing the strips of ribbon is with a simple knot and leaving it open on both sides of the wreath form.

Simple Wreath Hanger

Now let's make that cute wooden maple leaf banner pictured above but first, we need to make a wreath hanger.

To make a hanger, locate a hole on the top of the wreath form. Fold a short strand of baker's twine in half to make a loop and slip it through the hole. Tie a large knot (larger than the hole) to hold the wreath hanger in place.

Mini Wooden Maple Leaf Wreath Banner

  1. Use the largest wooden maple leaves in the package.
  2. Cut a strand of baker's twine a few inches longer than the width of the wreath and use a hot glue gun to attach five maple leaves like pictured below.
  3. Flip the banner over and whitewash the wooden maple leaves with one coat of thinned white acrylic craft paint.
  4. Find two holes on either side of your wreath form and thread the ends of the maple leaf banner from the front of the wreath to the back and tie a large knot, larger than the holes, to hold them in place.
  5. For July 4th you could use painted stars for the banner instead.

  3. This turned out so cute! Those wooden leaves are adorable... they're from Dollarama? I am definitely going to be looking for some next time I am in the store. They would be so cute for fall projects, too. I don't really decorate much for Canada Day, but you have some really nice ideas!

    1. Yes, you nailed it Cynthia, Dollarama it is! Is Dollarama your happy place like it is mine? We have four stores in our little hamlet and all carry different things. I have to pack a lunch on Dollarama shopping days. LOL Glad you like my wreath.
