DIY Wall Sconce Candle Holder or Vase

A DIY Wall Sconce candle holder OR vase for spring and summer with dollar store finds and a decoupage floral napkin. Today I'm sharing an easy and inexpensive dollar store craft idea for spring and summer.

It's unique and versatile because the pretty green mason jar can be used as a hanging battery-powered wall sconce or a flower vase. It's easy peasy to make with just four items from the dollar store and I'll show you how.

DIY Decorative Wall Sconce For Spring And Summer

As I mentioned above, the wall sconce can be used as a pretty hanging flower vase for Spring and Summer. Instead of fresh flowers (because there isn't a tulip to be had under the eight inches of snow on the ground here) I filled the jar with glass beads and faux tulips instead.

Or it can be used as a unique DIY wall sconce light with real or battery-operated tealights or votive candles.

Whether you use it as a candle holder or a vase, the mason jar wall sconce can be displayed indoors or outdoors throughout Spring and Summer.

If used outdoors, the decoupage napkin should be protected with outdoor grade Mod Podge. I would also recommend it be hung in a covered area of the yard.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to make the DIY decorative wall sconce, almost all of the DIY projects shared here at Interior Frugalista have step-by-step tutorials so why not get your budget DIY on and subscribe. You can also follow us on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

These are the dollar store supplies I used to make the decoupage wall sconce.

Plus this pretty green LED jar candle holder.

The cast metal floral garden hook complements the floral paper perfectly and we'll be making it even more perfect further down in the post.

But the fun part is to decoupage the pretty floral napkin onto the dollar store wood sign. If you are a regular reader then you know how much I love to decoupage with napkins.

An entire furniture makeover was inspired by just one napkin on my Serpentine Dresser makeover. You may also remember how I used dollar store napkins as a surprise element on Mom's Jewelry Cabinet Makeover. I love how napkins add an instant wow factor!

Supply List

Wooden Plank Sign
Floral Napkins For Decoupage
Flower Cast Iron Decorative Hook
Hanging Mason Jar LED Light
Matte or Outdoor Mod Podge
Retractable Craft Knife

Here's How I Made It

First, I painted the bronze metal hook with one coat of white chalk paint that I had on hand. The white adds a prettier contrast with the floral paper. I lightly distressed the paint with a 220-grit sandpaper so the floral details popped.

How To Decoupage With Napkins On Wood

If you've never tried your hand at decoupage with napkins, I've included easy to follow step-by-step instructions below.

  1. Sand the wooden plank smooth with a 120-grit sanding pad and wipe with a lint-free rag.
  2. Remove the extra ply from the napkins. It can be a bit tricky getting it started but if you rub on a corner it will start to separate.
  3. Find the napkin pattern placement you like. You may need to cut around some of the flowers so you don't have any napkins overlapping. You'll want to work in sections, starting with the largest piece of napkin. Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge onto the wooden sign with a foam brush. Pro-Tip: Place your hand inside a clean sandwich bag or a latex glove and run your hands over the napkin to smooth out any wrinkles.
  4. Repeat step three for the remaining napkin pieces. You may need to cut out individual flowers to fill in any empty voids. Don't worry about the napkins hanging over the sign, we'll deal with them later. Dab any areas that didn't have good contact, especially along the edges, with Mod Podge using a small artist's brush or the edge of the foam brush. Don't fret about the wrinkles, it's inevitable you'll have some.
  5. Once the Mod Podge is dry you can trim the napkins in one of two ways. Use a sharp retractable craft knife OR by rubbing 220 grit sandpaper along the edges.
  6. Protect the napkins with two coats of either a matte Mod Podge or Outdoor Mod Podge. Pro-Tip 1: It's best that you have a generous amount of Mod Podge on the brush or you risk tearing the paper. Pro-Tip 2: Whatever you do, don't go over the same area twice.

Hanging The Wall Sconce

The jute twine hanger was facing the wrong direction so I removed it with a staple remover and attached a sawtooth picture hanger instead. But I could have easily just moved the twine in the opposite direction and stapled it back onto the plaque.

That's it! Here's another decoupage idea for Spring that you may like, also made with dollar store finds. This decoupage napkin birdhouse looks so cute displayed on a mantle or coffee table tray vignette.

  8. Ahhhhhhhh, I think you've just taught me a really neat trick when it comes to mod podging napkins. We call them serviettes here BTW, coz napkins go on baby's bottoms :D Anyhooos, using a sandwich bag is going to make things so much easier next time around. Thanks so much Marie
