DIY Budget Wedding Guest Table Centerpiece Risers

The motivation for making wooden table risers was for our daughter's destination country-style wedding. She got married in a beautiful rural setting in the Cariboo region of British Columbia.

The goal was to create a beautiful, rustic, homespun wedding and it was important that every detail be handmade with love. For the base of the floral centerpieces that sat on top of the table risers, we made these rustic wooden love heart boxes.

For the wedding, we also made a budget-friendly Rustic 4-Tier Wedding Cupcake Stand and a unique Rustic Wedding Card Box.

I must apologize for the quality of some of the photos. I planned on taking photos at the venue with my DSLR camera after we finished decorating. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and borrowed these photos from others taken with their cell phones.

How To Make Rustic Wooden Table Risers For A Wedding

To build the table risers we used inexpensive six-foot-long rough fence boards.

Cut Dimensions

The boards were ripped on the table saw at both 2 1/2-inches and 3 1/2 inches wide. Then the boards were cut into 20-inch lengths. Also, cut some of the 2 1/2-inch boards 7-inches long to use for the battens.

Adding Rustic Charm To New Boards

To give the new boards some rustic charm, they were stained with one coat of a dark walnut color. Applied with a lint-free rag and then wiped immediately so the color didn't get too dark.

After the stain dried overnight, I dry brushed the boards with white chalk paint. To do this dab the brush on a paper towel to remove the excess paint. Hence the term dry brush.

With light pressure, brush the paint in long brush strokes with the grain of the wood. It gives the boards a wash of white paint so the dark walnut color peeks from underneath.

Wedding Centerpiece Table Riser Assembly

The table risers are assembled in a board and batten style like shutters. Set a 2 1/2-inch board upside down on the worktable and butt a 3 1/2-inch board beside it. Set another 2 1/2-inch board beside it.

Place a 2 1/2-inch board across the three boards about 2 1/2-inches down from the top and about 1-inch from each side. Attach the batten with 1 1/2-inch brad nails. Repeat this step on the bottom.

What Can I Do With The Table Risers After The Wedding?

Now that the wedding is over, I made these rustic JOY holiday signs with some of the table risers to sell at a local holiday market. They are perfect frames for fun DIY seasonal signs. But I'll also butt some together down the center of my dining table for seasonal centerpieces.
