Upcycled Shabby Chic Tall Wrought Iron Candle Holders
This is one of those projects that is so easy that I almost didn't blog about it. Seriously, it took mere minutes to breathe new life into an $8 set of metal candlesticks from Goodwill. It never ceases to amaze me how white paint can completely transform...well almost anything. Just a wee bit of paint gave these upcycled tall wrought iron candle holders farmhouse shabby chic style.
I did the happy dance when finding these because they came in a set AND they are tall floor candleholders which you don't come across often. This is what the metal candlesticks looked like before...
Nothing wrong with the bronze finish but painted white, all those curvy details pop. How dramatic would they look set on a fireplace mantel or dining sideboard? But they look great on the floor flanking a fireplace like I did for Valentine's Day.
To add French Country charm, I made a couple of simple sleeves with a French burlap ribbon. I used real candles for the sake of the photos but I will be switching them out with flameless candles (I didn't have any on hand at the time). Please do not use real candles with candle sleeves as it presents a fire hazard.
The candle sleeves add a little je ne sais quoi to the candle holders, wouldn't you agree?
Are you ready? I mean you can't get any easier than this. Three thin coats of Primer White spray paint. That's it!
Once the paint is dry, distress the edges with a sheet of 150-grit sandpaper for a shabby chic finish.
Like I said earlier, making these candle sleeves couldn't get easier. I used a sewing machine but you don't have to. Fabric glue or a simple hand stitch will do.
Measure the circumference of the candle plus 1/2 inch and cut the ribbon to fit. Sew the ends of the ribbon together with a 1/2 inch seam allowance and voila!
