Canadian Prairie Girl's Maiden Voyage To Hobby Lobby!

Today I'm steering away from my usual DIY projects to share a funny story about this Canadian Prairie Girl's maiden voyage to Hobby Lobby.

Last week I accompanied Mr. Frugalista on a business trip to Southern Ontario. My friend Denise, the wife of Mr. Frugalista's colleague, and I headed south to enjoy some cross-border retail therapy while the husbands were at the office.

It's been on my bucket list for years to visit Hobby Lobby for the first time. We don't have any stores in Canada and the closest to my home in Alberta is over an eleven-hour drive.

Canadian Prairie Girl's First Trip To Hobby Lobby

Since I started blogging, I've been so jealous seeing all the amazing products my American blogging friends find at Hobby Lobby for their projects, and at such amazing prices.

So when Denise pulled into the parking lot for this Canadian prairie girl's first shopping trip to Hobby Lobby, I couldn't get out of the car fast enough.

When we entered, my eyes looked like a dear in headlights. I stood in the doorway with my jaw dropped to the floor while I took it all in.

I looked to the left, then to the right, and wondered how on earth I choose an aisle when all I wanted to do was run in every direction.

The first aisle we went down was the seasonal aisle and I was like a kid in a candy store admiring the vast array of Christmas decorations.

I hope I wasn't too embarrassing for Denise as I shrieked, OMG, look at that! Did you see this? I can't believe these prices!

But when we hit the holy grail...

a.k.a. the knobs and hardware aisle, I swear I heard angels sing!

This furniture upcycling gal could have plopped herself down in the middle of the aisle bawling like an over-stimulated toddler. So much furniture knob eye candy in one place for this prairie girl to comprehend. How do you pick when there are so many choices?

Back home it is always a challenge to find unique furniture knobs and pulls for my furniture makeovers. It's hit and miss and most often the only place I find them is at boutique stores at a premium price.

Pictured above are a few of my choices from that maiden voyage to Hobby Lobby. I'll be sharing the furniture and home decor makeovers I used them on further down in the post.

It was such a letdown remembering we were flying home and having to restrain myself from filling the shopping cart.

After three hours of pure retail joy, we decided to leave. Truthfully, I could have easily stayed another three.

I think Hobby Lobby needs a Starbucks in the center of their stores. Shop, refuel with caffeine and keep on keeping on.

As promised, these are the furniture and home decor makeovers that I used some of the beautiful knobs purchased during my maiden voyage to Hobby Lobby.

I've yet to stumble on any of these gorgeous furniture knobs locally and this prairie girl needs another cross-border trip to Hobby Lobby to replenish my stash.

Other Purchases From Maiden Voyage To Hobby Lobby

After stopping for lunch on that exciting shopping day, we went to Joanne's and Kirkland's, also stores we don't have in Canada. Aside from the heavy lot of furniture knobs, I also came home with this cute metal coffee mug wall art for my kitchen.

And this adorable oversized metal coffee mug to hold coffee k-cups for our Keurig coffee maker.

I couldn't resist this Christmas pillow, the green color looks so good on the red-painted fabric wing chair in our living room.

I have a thing for bird decor and when I saw the silver Noel Cardinal, I couldn't resist. I also got the adorable skate toothpick holder pictured below on the right.

On Saturday morning, Mr. Frugalista and I had to go shopping again...

to find an extra carry-on bag to haul my retail therapy home on the plane!

Clearly, this prairie girl needs to get out of her bubble more often. Oh, Hobby Lobby how I wish thee were in Canada! 🙏🏻

    1. I'm so jealous it's a hop skip and a jump for you and Andrea to head to the Niagara Falls, NY store for furniture hardware and other goodies. The was struck by the sheer size of the store and everything it has to offer! One day I would love to accompany Mr. Frugalista on a business trip and join the two of you for some HL retail therapy! xoxo

  2. It used to be a long trip or an online order for us. When we finally did get one COVID hit and we weren't going anywhere. I do hope to get back to shopping in person more frequently again.

    1. Enjoy those trips to HL again. I wish it were easier for us to shop in person or not so expensive to have things shipped.
