Doing The Side Table Shuffle and How To Update An Inexpensive Box Store Table

We've been doing the side table shuffle around here these days. Shop the home as I was taught in my Interior ReDesign/Home Staging training and that's exactly what's been happening. This table used to be in the living room but it has now been shuffled to the master bedroom. But first, it needed to be refreshed to work in the space. Today I'm showing you how easy it is to add personality to an inexpensive box store table and completely change the look.

Inexpensive Box Store Side Table Makeover

This lovely Indonesian Swan Table that I picked up for a song at a discount store many years ago used to be dark brown. It has been used as a night table in the master for many years but without a drawer, it's function is limited. It's being moved to the living room to make way for the box store table.

Because it's going to sit between these two beauties, well they will be when I'm done with them, that we found on Kijiji (Canadian buy & sell site).

But before I move the box store table from the living room into the master, it needed a makeover. It started out with a dark espresso finish and I think I paid a whopping $49 for it and it looked like it.

How To Update An Inexpensive Box Store Table

When I first discovered milk paint the table became my guinea pig. It was updated in the colors boxwood green and ironstone white and the original wood knob was replaced with a pretty glass one. I was quite happy with the results and it stayed like that for several years.

But now that it's moving to the master, it doesn't work so well with the blue and gray color scheme. So with a little tweaking, it received a befitting makeover in white, gold and duck egg blue.

The table is a perfect height to be used as a nightstand and I'm loving the handy drawer.

The top and inside the drawers were painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in the color duck egg blue and the drawer lined with pretty scrapbook paper that was decoupaged with Mod Podge.

Along the edge of the top was rubbed with metallic gold gilding wax using my finger to randomly apply it. The glass knob was replaced with this pretty white and gold polka dot knob that I had in my stash.

The rest of the table was painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in the color pure white and distressed along the edges. The bottom tier was begging for a little something something so I stenciled a flower using the gold metallic gilding wax.

The legs got a hand-dipped finish using painters tape and gold metallic gilding wax then distressed by vigorously buffing it to remove some of the gold.

The table compliments the other gold elements in the room nicely.

As much as I loved the swan table in this room I'm quite pleased with its replacement.

I hope I've inspired you to keep those inexpensive box store tables and jazz them up with paint and pretty new hardware. No one will ever know that it came from a box store when you're done.

Now it's time to head down to the workshop and get started on those two armchairs.
