Stunning Greek Key Pine Bedside Table Makeover

Have you had those moments in life when it tilts to crazy and you just want to crawl in a hole and escape? Into my hole, aka basement workshop, I went. Nothing tunes out the chaos better than cranking up some music, grabbing a paint brush, and escaping into the creative zone for a few hours.

While browsing the thrift stores on his lunch hour, Mr. Frugalista sent me a text asking if I could do anything with a very plain two-drawer night table. Heck ya and how soon can you get it home? When the need to escape arose I got busy and within just a few short hours, this greek key pine bedside table makeover emerged and I couldn't be more happy with the night and day transformation.

To get an idea of where we started, this is what the rather plain bedside table looked like before.

After a good scrub with vinegar, soap and water solution, I roughed up the pine with 80-grit sandpaper wrapped around a sanding block to give the paint some bite.

Next, I painted the sides, and rails of the bedside table with two coats of a creamy white chalk paint color called Vanilla Frosting. The top, skirt, and drawer fronts were painted a pretty soft blue-green chalk paint color called Elegance. Elegance is one of my favorite colors in the Country Chic Paint line.

To add some personality I stenciled around the center of each drawer front and along the edge of the top with the same vanilla frosting chalk paint and n arabesque greek key stencil (link to stencil further down in the post).

I had these pretty green glass knobs in my stash and thought they were the perfect bling for the pretty blue-green paint color on this piece.

The paint finish on the pine bedside table was protected with a coat of clear wax, buffed with a lint-free rag to a beautiful matte finish.

To deepen the color and give the table a timeworn look, I applied a coat of dark wax on the drawer fronts, skirt, and tabletop. I applied it darker along the bottom of the skirt where it would normally get dirtied and worn and around the knobs where hands grab the knobs to open the drawers.

I'm so glad I decided to escape the chaos for some chalk paint therapy. It certainly helped to improve both my spirits AND the pine night table that went from blah to ooh la la. I'm happy to report that this greek key bedside table sold very quickly along with the Vintage Headboard With Touch Of Elegance to go with it for a client's guest bedroom.

This wasn't my first bedside table rodeo, this beat up Mid-Century Night Stand had no legs and after a dramatic transformation, it now resides in our master bedroom.

  1. This is gorgeous, Marie. I adore the color. Pinning to come back to for info when I get around to giving a makeover to a chest of drawers that I've been neglecting.
