How to turn a scarf into an easy DIY Valentine's Wreath

This DIY Valentine's idea is so easy, you can make it in less than 10 minutes. I know - I know, we've barely packed away Christmas and I'm already talking Valentine's Day. Today is our monthly Thrifty Chicks Group challenge and the task is to repurpose a scarf or hankie. I had a red scarf that I unearthed while organizing the bedroom closet before the holidays. I immediately thought of this challenge and how I could repurpose it into a DIY Valentine's Wreath.

I tucked the scarf away until after the holidays to save for this challenge. Fast forward to last weekend...

I can't remember where I put it.

Back to my bedroom closet for Plan B.

I found another red scarf but it's one of my favorites and I wear it often. At this point, there was no time to go shopping so I had to come up with a plan where after Valentine's Day, I could wear the scarf again.

Before I get into the details of how I used items gathered around the house to make this quick and easy DIY Valentine's idea, I should tell you a little about the Thrifty Chicks group. On the second Wednesday of every month, my creative junk loving friends and I come together to transform, upcycle or repurpose a junk find based on a theme. As I mentioned above, this month the theme is repurposing a scarf or hankie.

How To Turn A Scarf Into An Easy DIY Valentine's Wreath

I used a grapevine wreath that I had on hand but you could use a wire, styrofoam, straw, flat wood fiber or handmade heart-shaped wreath form. Because I want to be able to wear the scarf again, I covered the wreath with plastic wrap so it wouldn't snag the scarf. Then I simply wrapped the scarf around the wreath form and tied it near the bottom, leaving some strands hanging.

Scarf Wrapped Valentine's Wreath

To embellish the wreath I hot glued red & white bakers twine onto two wooden hearts.

Next, I slipped a strand of bakers twine through the clasps of two metal heart-shaped charms and attached the strands to the back of the hearts. The charms I purchased on sale 6 to a package for $2.99 but you could use an old brooch, pendant, or earrings.

Scarf Wreath Hanging Heart Charm

I had to come up with a way to attach the hearts temporarily onto the scarf and so I hot glued soda can tab onto the back of the hearts and attached them with safety pins.

The felt heart was an afterthought because as they say in the design world, grouping things in three are more appealing to the eye. I used double-sided tape to attach it to both hearts.

To add more contrast, I wrapped bakers twine around the scarf and made a loop for a hanger.

Coffee and Baileys in front of the fire snuggled in my favorite blankie with a good book is pretty much where I spent the Christmas break.  Time to warm up so let's get this party started!
